Why not put together a pdf version of your documentation and sell it?
I would definitely pay $75 for a decent PDF of the documentation. That’s a good idea.
You should also simply offer a license for Cocos2D for say? $150.
I also suggest a “support incident” for say $150 (for say three incidents, whatever) — a little bit like buying “just” the incidents from the Sapus package.
Money is a good thing. The only way we can all enjoy Cocos is you you make lots and lots of money Ricardo!!! We all want you to make huge amounts of money so you can devote all your time to this. Good luck!
You can generate the PDF. I just generated it using Doxygen and LaTex(MacTex 2009). I now have a linked PDF. Gladly share with anyone. You should make a donation to Cocos2d and I’d happily send you what I generated.
I’ve another idea…an APP that syncs and downloads the updated online documentation and API reference to the iPhone for an offline use
A lot of people would pay for it
I agree with the comment from Fatty. You have an amazing product here that many many people have benefited from. I think a one time payment of $150 is a small price for what you get. It’s enough so just about anyone can afford it and large enough so you get paid for all the hard work you are doing. You get paid and keep on doing the great work you’re doing and we can enjoy it and make all the cool games we want to with it. Win Win.
Well…
I’m pretty sure, that cocos is popular and good because it is free.
“Software is like sex; it’s better when it’s free. Attributed to Torvalds at 1996 FSF conference”
However, if you get some money on your cocos based game, why don’t you donate some percent to engine developer?
Promote third party tools or games source code based on cocos2d and take a % from the sale of this products. (like apple store does).
I think this will have 2 benefits: will boost the cocos2d features and also will bring some money to cocos2d.
I agree with Mickey, software is good when it is free. As we do have the cocos2d community, why don’t we organize some programs for promoting the cocos2d engine and its developer. Well it might sound difficult task. Most people who sell game using cocos2d would definitely donate for it
Free software is great, but it also comes with the stigma that it “might not be very good” if it’s free. This isn’t true for everyone, and for people who give cocos2d a fair chance. One other thing about free software, is people are more prone to take it “for granted” than something they pay for. If you buy Corona for $199, you’re not going to take it for granted.
I would say that you could follow the Corona model, let it be free until a developer wants to publish something, but then beat Corona’s price by making it $99 when the publisher is ready to publish. $99 is fair and a lot better than Corona’s annual $199 fee. (If you want to get the latest updates.)
Anyway, just some ideas.
Hey, i would like to buy levelsvg, where i can buy it ?
Why would we want to pay for something when it is free? Just donate money to the guy so he can pay his bills and buy a decent car. What is it with everyone and greed in this effed-up world? Get over the money.
You’d better open an account in China bank since i couldn’t donate because Paypal china doesn’t support paying to international account. Or you can run a E-store at China, like TaoBao.com,the biggest B2C website ,where we can buy your T-shirt to support this project.
And Andrew McNutt’s idea is too Expensive to agress. $150 means 150X6.5=1000¥, which is 1/4 of our mounth income ,and it’s only a beginning.
@all the people talking about 150$,probably you have no idea what 150USD means in most countries of the world,i am from india and i can safely say,if there was a license fee of 150$,most users(except maybe from the rich countries) would simply choose to leave, and probably lose all hope too.
i love cocos2d because it gives a guy in a third world country to survive and compete with the world as an independent developer, the worth of cocos2d is far more than the other tools precisely BECAUSE it is free….
my recommendation would be similar to someone else’s here, people want to contribute, and since they are iphone developers, they can easily buy apps from the store, so if you create an app with documentation in it(as most would love to have it on the device), and charge 1 ot 3 USD they would gladly pay…, maybe add inapp purchases(for example,an inapp purchase can unlock a small cocos2d example…i think such small example games can be easily sourced from within the community,i would love to make a small example game as donation) for people who want to contribute more money,
seriously, please create a small app so that we can buy it and 100% of the proceeds(after apples cut)go to you, ill buy it if it is < 3 dollars…and maybe regularly buy inapp purchases,if my games do well…i think most others would do too…also the "taking for granted" issue, well that cant be generalized, many take a bmw for granted, while millions in another part of the world only dream of touching one.
i respect you for what you are doing and your resolve that you manage to provide it for free…
How about you do a free version and then add some extra features/tutorials/tiles/etc for a premium verion (can be however much you would like to charge). That’s what Unity3D does for their software.
Hi!
Maybe would be a good idea to sell private support!
The way JFreeChart do it is to have basic documentation so people can get up and running but then you can buy really good pdf with some excellent examples.
Hey I can’t wait to make my own game I’m pretty shore that coco20 is popular because there’s thousands and thousands of people chatting about it and i want to thank you of this website I can’t wait to make my own game I just relised that I said that twice
