Hi there cocos2d people. After over a year of work, we are proud to announce Pangolin, physics-based-action-arcade-puzzle-platformer... or something. We are a small team (two!) and this is our first completely self-funded, self-released app. We put a lotta sweat + love into this game, and hope it shows. It should be available in the store within the next two weeks.

We also wanted to give a *BIG* thank you to the cocos2d community. There is no way this game would have been made without your help!

There is a Pangolin Run... A free version...

Where you swipe the screen to stop the Pangolin from falling.

It looks like it just two games that are similar though?

Yours looks a lot more fun.... I just looked up pangolin.... Some kind of armadillo... Amazing that someone has a similar name.

When there are 1 million apps its practically impossible to come up with a unique name.

Anyway, I can't seem to find it. But I will buy it... when it becomes available.

@mster50 Thanks so much for the kind words! We liked the idea of isolating the interaction and using it in other (real-world) contexts. Glad it came through. We spent a fair amount of time getting that footage and probably got a little attached to it... which could explain why we've heard some saying the live action intro goes on a bit long. Anyway, we like how it came out, so are very glad someone else does too.

@ajlondon Yeah, we found that Pangolin Run game in the App Store a few months ago when we were getting close to submitting. I was definitely surprised to find another game with a Pangolin as the main character! Actually, there is another one besides ours that features Pangolins too. I think in Asia they might be a bit more common, which could explain it. At least the interactions for those games are pretty different. Anyway, our game should be in the store very soon. Probably within a week. The plan is to make it free for the first 10 levels, and then IAP of $1.99 for the next 40 levels (but starting it at $0.99 on release). I'll be sure to post here when it's up.

@feedtank should let us know how this one gets on, I would probably throw in more than 10 levels before bringing up the IAP.

@VagabondX Thanks! Very glad to hear it!

@KeitZer We did use box2d, and parsed SVG for line work in the levels. We ended up doing a fair amount of performance tweaking to get a smooth frame rate.

@cocojoe I'll post back here with an update. Don't hesitate to ask here after it's released if you're curious and I haven't yet. We originally had 50 in first world (IAP), but in beta testing, found we might not need as many... though that was before level tweaking and making things easier (we got feedback that it was too difficult - we had been playing with it for over a year). Anyway, it's something we'd consider and are sensitive to. We trying to be as clear as possible the $0.99 thing is for a limited time.

@ilguano Thanks for the feedback!

There were two people (myself Jonah Warren, and Steven Sanborn) working on this game for over a year – probably somewhere between a quarter and half time. I did art and level design, and Steven did the programming. We are both programmers/designers so there was definitely a fair amount of overlap w/r/t roles.

So, we have a release date! It'll be in the store next Wednesday, December 12th! That's 12/12/12. We actually didn't realize the repeating date thing when we set it (my wife pointed it out last night).

@nf Thanks. Showing more gameplay is actually something we've been going back and forth on. We like the idea of keeping the video short, piquing viewers interest, so they go and get it immediately. There isn't as much to lose since it's free to try. However, we do want to show enough to get them to that point, and to show them the cool stuff that comes later.

If you're going to add more footage... it should be ~15 seconds long... ~5 of which is your company name / available on app store (in beginning / end) with ~10 seconds of gameplay

each clip could show off generic gameplay with 1 in the middle showing a trick play or special way to do something, and 1 clip at the end showing off something uber-cool (or interesting), like in your video in the OP you have the spikey level, and damn that looks hard, aka challenging, aka getting people to DL it

What got me 'excited' about the game... or will make me download it is the SPIKY level I saw....

That looked challenging and interesting.

So KeitZer may be correct in adding more gameplay...

But its free... I think you will do just fine.

Well... I was just suggesting ideas as for what to include... obviously you'd like to keep some (if not most) of the "cool" things hidden until they play it....

but it's not a movie, it's game, and if the user sees what's cool, they'll wanna play it themselves... so it may be a good thing to show off some of the more boss features of your game

@KeitZer Yeah I hear you re: showing off the game. I think it's just finding that balance you're talking about.

@ajiondon You actually bring up another issue re:the Spikey world. As this video was made a month or two ago, that shot, as well as the opening-the-door shot are actually taken from worlds that we've buit the art and mechanics for, but haven't built the levels for. While these world are not actually in the game we'll be releasing, we plan on releasing those worlds soon (maybe a month of dev for each?). We've been discussing whether we should take them out for the release version of the trailer since they didn't make the game yet.
