Hello fellow cocos2dians, I'm happy to give you all a preview of my upcoming game...

Tap 2 Dance
Lil' Urban Dancer
Feat. Hip Hop Music

Tap 2 Dance is a rhythm game that uses multi-touch gestural patterns set to the beat of hip hop music. I use a thoroughly hacked version of the latest dev branch of cocos2d, but I try my best to give back the good bits to the community :)

Looking forward to seeing the video. Im assuming you are using a 2d skeletal animation system for the dancers? I like the boxy heads.

@codemattic Yep, I am using a 2d skeletal animation system, and I made a special editor scene that I use so I can create the dance animations on the device (i prefer using iPad because it has a bigger surface). I set it up so I can touch on each limb to set keyframes for rotation, position and scale.

@bradparks Thanks for keeping an eye out. The game got stalled because of difficulties licensing music (I was shooting to get big names like Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga, ...) it turned out that it is prohibitively expensive and time consuming to pursue any longer. While I was dealing with that the 4.1 iOS update was released, and I have been focussing on writing code to detect the beat of music from the iPod library. The game is very close to complete now but I don't have a set release date yet. All I can say is stay tuned and join the facebook Tap 2 Dance Fan Club:

There are some known issues with this version and I have an update already going out (Stay tuned for a v1.1 announcement).

So if you end up with a song that refuses to load and gets your game into a locked state you should force quit it from the task switcher menu. It also has some quirks with task switching to the iPod app.

v1.1 of the game offers a whole new audio subsystem that resolves these issues along with allowing you control over the music volume (instead of just master volume) and most exciting for the nerds among us will be the real time audio FFT and beat detection to make the dancer really dance along with your music.

Real time audio FFT and beat detection sounds like huge amount of calculation. And what tech do you use for sound engine? I mean openAL, audioqueue, ...

The FFT is done using Apple's accelerate framework and using audioqueue with AVAssetReader to get to the iPod music and OpenAL for sound effects.

First of all I want to say that game looks really prof. I can't imagine how much time you spent to develop.

First time game launching I choose my song on Roomin Dance Floor and song has not start playing. Hmm, I returned to main menu, new game, Talent Show and crash happened. During the second launch I was not able to replicate such issues.

Congrats on the launch!!

I've seen a few different iterations of the game throughout this year and what's been posted here doesn't even begin to tell the story of the work that went into this title. Definitely check out this game.

I'm really loving this game now that I know you are supposed to use multiple fingers. Some dances are almost a puzzle to work out how to best utilise your fingers.

@CJ are you releasing an update fairly soon? I am having the same issue as sdm02 above - song doesn't start playing on the "Roomin'" level. I'm saving my review for once you get 1.1 out :) So far looks really professional, and love the way you can use your own picture for your character!

Update to v1.1 of Tap 2 Dance Lil' Urban Dancer today http://t2d.hiapps.us

This fixes issues in loading music. It also adds a button to the in game pause menu to let you change songs without having to go back through the main menu.

Hi CJ,

After I upgraded my music volume setting was set to 0. Caused me a bit of confusion at first as I wasn't hearing any music. I tested on two devices so I don't think it was me being stupid.
