Hi there,
As part of an app I'm making, I'm wanting a 5 minute or so video to be playing in the background while other things (such as sprites) are moving around on top.
I'm not looking for someone to paste the code, but would be nice to hear if anyone else has tried this, or if any of you have any good ideas on the best way to do it :)
Is this even possible to do on the iPhone?

It goes over some examples. As I've never used these classes/frameworks before, I can't really say what they can or cannot do. I recommend you at least checkout that article and see if you can find any more information on the classes/frameworks used.
I know very well that iOS 4 has the ability to play video with custom overlays, as it was demoed at WWDC2010. I'm guessing the previous video playback methods don't allow a custom overlay and use Apple's built in media player UI.
has anyone tried this yet? i took some video of our recent trip to jamaica with the intention of using it as a background (think raymans raving rabbids on the wii, the plunger levels)
