Greetings,
I often see that many programmers have 3rd party artists create their graphics, but I am left wondering what rate should one expect to pay for artwork?
To be more precise, I am talking about 2d style platformer type graphics (sonic, mario, etc)...including animated characters, tilesets, backgrounds...
I am sure the rate varies with the quality of the artwork, but if someone could shed some light on this subject, I am sure it would be very helpful for many people (myself included of course) to get a feel for the artwork costs involved in game development.
Of course, if anyone is willing to post a link to their game as well as a rough idea of the cost of the artwork, that would be even more helpful as it would put the cost into the context of the (admittedly subjective) quality of the graphics.
(Please note: Recommendations of artists are welcome as well, but since the primary focus of this question is cost, please include some idea of their rates).
Thanks
PS(Also as a unit of measure, if you specify the hourly rate, then how much artwork is it reasonable to expect for an hour of work?)
