What do you guys think about the new iAd?
Posted 1 year ago # -
I think 60% is a low percentage. :(
But it's interesting....Posted 1 year ago # -
Yeah, not sure what to make of this:
“The user can return to their app any time they want. We think the user will be much more interested in clicking on these things because they won’t pay the penalty for doing so. You can add iAd opportunities in an afternoon — we’re going to host and deliver the ads, and we’ll give developers an industry standard 60% of the revenues.”
I guess he's talking about free apps here serving up Ads.

I am SOOOO excited for OS 4!!! :D

Yep, so much for openFeint! LOL!!
I'd be interested to see what the actual revenues from iAd really are. Though, hopefully this might encourage better quality free apps.

ok, I see tons of things important from the user's point of view (folders...). but the real question is...
does it blend ? ;)
other than Game Center iAd and some (yet undescribed) new API calls - is there anything important for the developers ?

Cant wait for the dev site to come back online!!!
I was sold on folders, ive got far to many pages on my iphone :D
4.0 is going to have a massive effect on openfeint and the ad networks like, admob and mobclix...
Quote from Steve that is interesting, "We tried to buy AdMob, but Google snatched them up because they didn't want us to have them, so we bought another smaller company, Quattro."

Apple is not very friendly.
- Multitasking+Skype vs. Communication company.
- Game Center vs. Openfeint
- iAds vs. google adsense
- Mail+conversations vs. Gmail
- HTML5 vs. Flash.LOL!!

What I find the most interesting (insane?) is that Apple is so quick to offer their own solutions for two of the largest 3rd party middleware spaces right now -- the ad space and the Game Center equivalents. You gotta wonder if they even tried bringing some of the people behind these existing companies in to lead these projects. I mean, that would seem like the decent thing to do, given that these prior solutions helped to improve the quality/experience in the iDevice space up until now (at this point, I really doubt they did anything like this). They really do want to control most everything, don't they!?
This is something to consider when pursuing middleware/etc. spaces in an environment like Apple's, I guess (that they can come along and one-up/internalize anything you've been attempting to offer as a service/product). The affected companies will have to change completely at this point or basically die, I would think. I guess someone could argue that these companies already tasted success, and have done well for themselves (and wouldn't have done so without Apple), but man. Business is business, I guess. Rough!

has there been any official word on pricing ? is the update gonna be free or we're gonna see the 50% on OS2.0 50% on OS3.0 story all over again ?

iphone dev center is up now.

i think it will be helpful for developer (us) with iAd as Admob and other ads company might lower their share to compete with Apple.

Another interesting features:
+GameKit+Game Center (Very interesting)
+Accelerate Framework
+Grand Central Dispatch??
+Block Objects (Native)
+Core VideoPosted 1 year ago # -
With an unified social gaming platform, this may solve _some_ discovery issues with the App Store. Text from the beta reference libs also leads me to believe that we won't see the Game Center for a while and maybe with more added.
I hope admob has significant revenue streams from other platforms. Otherwise Google just wasted a lot of the $750mm they used to buy it.

@manucorporat
is there a way to install the 4.0 iPhone OS via Xcode or iTunes without having to wipe it?Posted 1 year ago # -
ok, I dont get the thing with GameKit / Game Center...
Important: GameCenter is available to developers only in iPhoneOS 4.0. It is introduced as a developer-only feature so that you can provide feedback as you implement and test Game Center features in your applications. However, Game Center is not a user feature in iPhone OS 4.0 and you should not deploy applications that use it to the App Store.can someone please explain what that means ?

It's not so sudden; Apple started hiring a bunch of game developers about a year and a half ago, so I'm kind of surprised it took so long. I suspect they have something else in the works given the number of long time industry people they hired.

Game Center is not a user feature in iPhone OS 4.0but what's that about ?
you cannot submit an app that makes use of OS 4.0 until it goes live in few months from now, so why the extra information ? does that mean that Game Center will NOT be part of 4.0 but 4.1 or something ?
Documentation on all topics is in the DevCenter, but when you go to Game Kit Framework Reference it says on the top:
Important: This is a preliminary document for an API or technology in development. Although this document has been reviewed for technical accuracy, it is not final.Posted 1 year ago # -
I think it is talking about the App 'Game Center' that gets installed with OS 4.0 Beta...it's a sandbox environment for testing and the app won't be available to the end user.

From daringfireball.net
In the new version of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement released by Apple today (and which developers must agree to before downloading the 4.0 SDK beta), section 3.3.1 now reads:
3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited).
Will this affect cocos2d, it's python, isn't it? Or is cocos2d-iphone a complete port?
