@itlgames
good job.
BTW I think that when you sort the games by rating, the higher valoration should be first.
A fast, easy to use, free, and community supported 2D game engine
What's up with the categories? "Flying Hero", "Zombies"? I think pulling from the iTunes category assigned to the app would be more accurate and less confusing to people browsing. Good work so far though.
Agreed. No need to reinvent the wheel. Apple already spent time thinking of category names that describe things well.
If a person wants someone to know that their game features zombies, they would put "zombie" into the tags for the game. For example, if it's a zombie survival game it will be in the Action category, with "zombie" and "survival" as two of the tags.
Having custom categories duplicates information already found in the tags of the game, as well as increases confusion of people searching since these categories do not exist on iTunes.
Keep is simple:
Action
Adventure
Arcade
Board
Card
Casino
Dice
Educational
Family
Kids
Music
Puzzle
Racing
Role Playing
Simulation
Sports
Strategy
Trivia
Word
:). If you want a sub-category, use the tags feature Apple provides.
@manucorporat, if you sort by rating, then click again, it will do a descending order, same happens with name, price and date. If what you are asking is to order first descending, then I think it's a good idea.
@jd and @robodude666, if you read the first messages on this post, you will see the whole idea of these cocos2d categories was to somehow link our games between them, in a maybe future cross promotion mechanism. Call it categories, call it tags, it's the same. Anyway I couldn't find a way to retrieve the iTunes subcategories or tags with the rest of the info, and it's not even on the iTunes app pages. The only thing I can automatically retrieve it's the category, and that's just "Games", not too descriptive.
This site is not pretended to be a clone of the iTunes store, as you say @robodude666 there is no point to do things already done, that's why shortly we will add more cocos2d oriented featured, and more detailed information, like videos, link to reviews, version of cocos2d used,...
I don't personally think the site is confusing anyone, nor the other people I have been talking with, but no one is forced to use the site if you don't like. And this site is not also pretending to replace the cocos2d games forum.
Anyway, thanks for your comments.
And here, the idea of our own set of categories, even before we thought about creating this site:
ah...you are right about the category only coming back as "Games" from iTunes. Well, I still think using the iTunes categories is still the way to go. I couldn't find category appropriate for my game and I figured it would be silly for me and others to request them to be added. Then it seems to be a pain to manage (for you) and more fragmented. I appreciate the work you have done thus far. Just voicing an opinion.
IMHO, I don't think it is confusing, and I like the "cocos2d" categories... specially I really like the zombie category :)
I don't think the apple categories have any real meaning anymore, I'm pretty sure doodlejump has poddled its way through any number of them. As long as @itlgames is happy to add the occasional category I'm happy with the existing system (I foresee a unicorn category becoming a requirement ;)
Nice work btw
Hi, thanks again for adding this @itlgames, nice work... would it be possible to add more technical categories? It's nice to compare notes on how others are handling things like Twitter, Facebook, Open Feint, iAds, Game Center, etc. Maybe cocos2d version?
Would especially love to see a "3D" category but perhaps that's too selfish...

Great job guys!
I was wondering... maybe the default page shouldn't be in alphabetical order, it seems a bit unfair. Maybe the default one should be sorted by release date, this way it would be more "dynamic". Then of course, if one wants to list everything by name or rating, can just do it.
Just my 2 cents...
Yes, makes lot of sense. Ricardo I will send you updated files.
I added my Pocket 3D Tunnel game! Glad to see that my iTunes Scraper script works correctly :)
Also it would be cool if you could tie people's apps to their forum accounts so you could go to someone's forum profile and see what games they have made...
I'd like to see something along the lines of techy's suggestion. I can see a number of potential issues such as multiple developers etc so what about adding a link to the forum post where the game is announced.
So for Super Turbo Action Pig I would link to http://www.cocos2d-iphone.org/forum/topic/4837 this gives all the developer info people may want without having to search the forums or visit itunes. You could even restrict it to forum posts only by allowing only the id part of the URL to be entered.
@abitofcode, yeah, will add something like that, I want to add review links, where we could put a description and a link, we could use it to link to anything really, not just reviews. Just been stuck with work this month, will try to carry one next month.
