I've just submitted a Doodle Blast! update. Boy, it was like releasing a whole new game.

What's new:

* a new mini-game - Attack of Evil Vampire Bunnies! - I just hope it gets approved before Easter ends :)
* health bar - thanks for the suggestion, it really helps!
* a news ticker - this might be a good tool to talk back to the users.
* offline score storage so you can submit your high scores later
* lots of bug fixes

Overall, this update includes over 3500 new lines of code (over 4100 if you include comments). Phew! Anyway, I hope you get a chance to check it out once it's available. When that happens, I will also post a few new promo codes.

Anyway, here are a couple of screen shots:

I'll be working on another video soon. I'll post it when it's ready.

I finally got a chance to try out Doodle Blast! HD on the actual device. It looks cool!

First impressions: I was worried about the frame rate. I'm using large textures for the background and in the simulator I was getting 15 FPS max. It was definitely coming from the textures because when I removed them, the FPS jumped to 40. Still, pretty low. However, on the device itself, I'm getting a smooth 60 most of the time. It's great to finally see the game run like butter.

So, in case you are still wondering, Cocos2D runs great on the actual device. Keep on coding! :)

Life on the iPad store is pretty non-existent. I should have gone with "Pants vs. Blondies" instead. :)

It'll be interesting to see how this performs. I'm guessing but doodle games may peform better with the younger demographic who may have had ipod touches as presents.

The new ipad buyer demographic may not be interested in doodle games yet. On an interesting note though, I have flurry integrated with the free version of sprint racers and it has counted 10 sessions on 3.2 devices already (ipad?). So there's hope.

@Genji, @David994A: thanks for the positive feedback and iPad hopes! We will see. I was excited to see it run on the big screen and that was totally worth it. It's hard going back to the iPhone now.

I like the contest idea! Is your plan to build a doodle operating system in increments over a number of updates?

those chimps look scary, I guess you need to be firm but fair.

15 ipad sessions by 10 new users for an average of 40 seconds. Looks like their just trying things out.

Tried the new update, nice those bunnies!! Found a bug though, if you click play, you have option to "play classic" and "play attack of evil vampire bunnies", but the "-mini-games-" not sure if is just the title or another button, but it's clickable, and if you click, the app crashes. Try that yourself, and if you don't get the problem, will send you a crash report.

@itlgames: Yes, that's a known issue. I discovered it half an hour after submitting the update. When you tap on a title, I try to use a nil selector and the app crashes. The fix is trivial and I have it ready for the next update. Until then, don't tap on titles :)

Ok, sorry, didn't know was a known issue.
Just curiosity, why do you need to make the title clickable? Is it because it's all part of a Menu object? If so, you can disable it, it will grey out that item, but you could extend the MenuItem class and create your own.

It's just an artifact of the setup. It's not meant to be clickable. I just never tested it and there is a bug. That's all.

Here is a question for you guys. To update or not to update?

I'm trying to figure out where to spend my next chunk of effort. I could either re-design the current version of Doodle Blast! to support all the suggestions and feedback the game received so far and post an update that could theoretically satisfy a lot of needs. However, I'm wondering what the chances of anyone actually noticing those changes would be. The alternative would be to produce a new game altogether.

Any thoughts on this? Did you guys have any experience in updating an existing game after it has been out for a while with some success?

You probably cannot satisfy all user needs, you could do those changes some people suggested and annoy another set of public. I personally would just fix any bugs, and improve any bits you think can be improved with not too much effort, but to re-design the whole game when it's been out for a while and with some success, may not be a good idea. In that case I would spend my efforts in a new game.

I also vote for "make another shiny one" - updates with all enhancements could satisfy existing users, on the other hand I'm not sure if this would really bring desired attention for others.
It also depends on particular game, e.g. pure level type of a game is more suitable for frequent updates I guess.

I think it really depends on if the update is universally accepted as an improvement or is just the fancy of a small minority. If all of your users would be in agreement that the particular update would add value, then it's a no-brainer to put it in - but if the update would be at all controversial don't bother. That should whittle down the many requests to just a few universal ones.

You may remember that a while back, I've written a few blog entries about the development of Doodle Blast. Along those entries, I've uploaded and linked a couple of YouTube videos to illustrate progress. Yesterday, someone posted a comment on one of those videos and I laughed so hard that I couldn't help but share. I've pulled the comment from YouTube since, but it's a gem. Here goes:

I come on youtube to get ideas and figure shit out, but when little pube-less bitches as yourself post shit that i watch and feel like throwing up, im glad there a hell where you will be rotting!! I'm delighted to announce that the most awesomest, super-duperest iOS creation yet, Doodle Blast! HD, has been resurrected from the ashes and updated for the new iPad retina display. Check it out - this is the actual size, pixel for pixel, of the main sprite used in the game:
