Just out of curiosity, but where do all you independent game developers out there find designers for sprites and backgrounds?

I don't have the capital to pay big bucks for a graphics designer (cocos2d is still mostly a hobby, after all) and I've been having a terrible time trying to find a designer to partner with... I've put a number of posts in design forums looking for someone to work 50/50 along side me (we'd split any app store profits evenly) and I haven't really had any luck at all.

I'm capable of designing things myself, but it takes me many lonnnnng hours that I would rather devote to coding.

Any suggestions or recommendations?

I was in the same position. I do the work and school thing full time (nothing to do with game dev) and consider this a hobby. I think you will have a hard time finding a quality artist with just a promise of profit sharing, especially since the odds really are against you at making any real money.

If you are willing to pay even a little, you could post a job on elance.com ($50 minimum) and see if you get any takers. You can also try the indiegamer forums. I was able to find a guy that did all my artwork for my 2d puzzle game for about $600.

Have you actually tried looking for someone locally, maybe show them a prototype running on a real device? I know it might be a bit scary having to talk to real people but sometimes that is what you have to do. The contract and tax issues can often be greatly simplified if you live in the same area.

Wow, http://builditwith.me seems like it could be EXACTLY what developers like me are looking for. I made a profile on my mac earlier today and I just checked back on my work PC only to discover it doesn't work in IE8! Seems a little bit like an epic #fail for a site connecting developers and designers! I hope they fix that!

you can take a look also in scriptlance.com with 50$ you can request a set of images\sprites\backgrounds for a complete game (little\medium project with not more than 100 images), but the problem are that you must have clear ideas before to post the project, because generally the worker do the job, take the money and disappear.

"Build It With Me" is a neat site. Two things though. One, it seems to only be for designers and developers rather than core artists. Two, I'm surprised so many people are willing to document their ideas there. There are plenty in the business of taking others' ideas.

So fast forward 2 months since I originally started this thread... and I've had great luck with elance.com. I've been able to get the art for 2 games produced for under $500 each. Seems pretty reasonable for the indie developer. However, while elance has a lot of general designers & animators, I find it rather short on "pixel artists".

Anyone know of good sites to find pixel artists to design tile maps & sprites?

Other way is buy(there are some free) 3d models some have animations, and render in png sequence at the view that you want

for the payed you can ask in any format you you want i.e. in blender that is a freeware 3d model design program based on opengl
