Sorry if I've missed something but from the header files I cannot see that it's possible to create a MenuItem with a background image and text. Am I correct?
I ask because it would be great if I could have a reusable background image for all (or most) of my menu items with a font based text overlay rather than one for each item with different text
So is this possible or would I need to subclass or other?

I had this article in my favorites as it shows a good extension on MenuItem for this exact thing:

I've also created a cocos2d class to do this called CCMenuItemLabelAndImage. The usage is exactly as you'd expect other cocos2d classes to. You can see the entire code for the class here: http://jamornh.com/creating-cocos2d-ccmenuitem-with-a-background
I hope this helps anybody that needs to create buttons with image and text so you don't have to create a hundred images for a hundred buttons with just different text.
The label os designed to move down 1 pixel when pressed to simulate the button press but that can also be customized in the "selected:" method.
