HELP: What are the best 2D tile graphics for a side scroller?

I want to compile a list to show my work that tile graphics can indeed look extremely nice. I'm opposed to laying over a giant graphic over an entire map, because for starters, it's very hard to make changes if needed, and takes up a lot more memory.

Post older games too, but I'm even more interested in new ones. I'm not looking for minimal graphics, but richly detailed graphics.

Here's some I found. As you can see I don't know too many..

Lion King (SNES)

Ghost Online

Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow

From a programming standpoint, tiles are nice and easy to organize and work with in code. From the art side it seems like they are a giant pain to create and lay out unless you have very square-ish level geometry. I know a lot of artists hate tilemaps them for that reason.

Food for thought: I think a nice happy medium between the "giant image" and tile methods is where you take images and splat them all over the place. Aquaria is a pretty good example of this:

It's easier to edit the maps than with tiles, and can give you way more flexibility in laying out your level.

That Aquaria video is amazing, especially the map editing. Unfortunately what I've making for the past 8-9 months does not work like that, but just uses a grid of tiles.
