Hi all,

Wonton 51 is now available in the app store. It's taken many months of hard work but it feels great to finally get an indie game out there - Couldn't have done it without you!

Thats a brilliant game! I managed to kill the end of level baddie - 'Eat Ramen!' lol!

I've given you 5 out of 5 on the AppStore review section

My only comment is that at Game Over screen, if I press the achievments button but dont chose Game Centre or Open Fient, but leave it there until my iPhone goes to sleep, when I come back into the game it crashes (But thats such a random sequence of events I doubt anyone would notice!)

Playing Wonton and Pixman has really got me thinking about the retro style, it works really well on a small form factor device like the iphone

Wonton 51 == 5 out of 5

Thank callaght! What was your score? The highest we've seen so far is 65000! I can't get near that!

Interesting that you found that crash - I'll certainly look at fixing it in an update.

There seems to be a retro-revival in mobile games at the moment. When we started the game several months ago there we're a few around but there have been some great titles out recently (like Commander Pixman) - hopefully this will be good news for Wonton 51.

My best score so far is 14000 and something.

That reminds me of another thing, can the points go up in 100's rather than single points to make the score seem more 'meaty' - anyway thats only personal opinion on highscores

14000 is pretty good - we're seeing lot's around 3000 or so at the minute. The controls are something you need to learn so in a couple of days we'll hopefully be seeing a few people doing really well.

The points thing is interesting. We actually tried increments of 100's, 10's, 1's and 0.1's! In the end, the 1's felt right as it allowed for score that is easier to remember (big numbers are hard to remember but small numbers seem insignificant). I'll be putting up a blog post soon about the various balancing / behind the scenes stuff and how we made the decisions we did.

Just grabbed the game, it looks awesome!!! Congratulations!
At the moment it is kind of difficult to shoot with one finger and control the ship with the other hand, it probably will get easier with practice.
It would be nice to control the ship with accelerometer.
Anyway, the game looks awesome, great job!!!

I was playing on iPad at first, but it is easier to control on iPod.

We did actually build in accelerometer function for testing but in the end, we ripped it out (or more accurately, commented it out) because it just didn't quite work with the game and broke the over all feel and made fine movements quite tricky. Maybe it'll get re-introduced with new game modes in future?!?

We actually tried and took out quite a few features because they just weren't right for the game - we're strong believers in keeping to the vision of the game and learning to master the controls is part of that (kind of like having to master / work with the controls in the early Resident Evil games!) Sorry, that sounds very arrogant and defensive... not my intention at all :)

I think the accelerometer would allow you to play with one hand, so you could then play it on the tube/bus/train, etc

24 hours in and things are going pretty well. More sales than I expected, we've got a few reviews guaranteed for some decent sites (and possible reviews for bigger sites) plus we have been invited to go and talk on a national radio show / podcast about it!

@cb31416 - We're excited! We're not recording it for a couple of weeks but I'll let you know. We're also being filmed for an interview this Saturday (I think) so again, I'll let you know.

@vashpan We're not up to your levels yet! I had expected around 20 per day though and we're doing better than that! I'll hopefully be putting some numbers together after the first month and compare them to various activities to see if there is anything we can learn from - I'll share whatever I find!

@callaght Yep, we're in the UK. Heh, the video interview is for a blog rather than TV so it's not a huge deal, the Radio one however is very cool. I think we we're quite lucky with this but we also targeted our promo codes very carefully and pretty much personalised each one for the actual recipient of the code. The guy I'm working with is nothing short of a guru when it comes to gaming and game design so he really knows how to hit the right note with people. His girlfriend has also done amazing PR work for us.

All in all, I don't think this will ever sell thousands but we're just happy that some people late really enjoying it!

Phew... Busy weekend helping my wife sell her mercy at the MCM Expo this weekend, made even busier by the fact Wonton 51 has been featured on the front page on iTunes in some territories (N&N) as well as being a featured game in 506 of them!

Thanks. I used LRT73PA7X47R. I enjoyed playing in Autofire mode with Direct control. It's nice to play using one hand. The Normal mode makes me block the screen and the Relative control moves the dude way too fast.

Also, I think the icon lacks the charm of the rest of the game.

It's worth mentioning that there is a small bug in version 1.1 where sometimes text won't disappear off the screen. You can fix it by firing up 'straight up' mode once. A patch has been submitted and will hopefully be approved in a week or so.

@qpawn The relative control came from a shmup community that tends to want much faster movement. I kinda like it on the iPad (2x mode) but like you, generally I'll use direct control. Interesting what you say about the icon, we've heard some good things about it but always happy to hear the criticisms too.

For those wondering, getting featured by apple really did work wonders. It wasn't shifting thousands of units a day but it was making a nice income. I still hope to write up about sales patterns that will help the cocos community.

Yeah, I usually play Relative controls in other shmups since it allows me to place my finger anywhere on the screen and still move without blocking my dude. But that doesn't matter in Wonton 51 since there's a designated place for me to slide my finger which is nice. :)

As for the icon, maybe my iPhone 3GS isn't doing it justice on the low-res screen. :)
