   Hi

   In my mind upgrading my XCode will be a hassle, I am not sure how true this is to upgrade to XCode 4 and get the cocos2D templates up and running, so I am sticking with 3.2.5. But as I am upgrading to iOS5, I am not sure of the implications for my development environment on my devices?

   Any advice appreciated.

   Good question, and I dont really have a full answer. The dev center doesnt have clear info on this, not that I can find anyway (I think they expect us to always have the latest). I've been informed you cant use ios5 on a test device and still use xcode3.

   I think I might upgrade my ipod 4th gen anyway, I've got an older 2nd gen to fall back on (which will only take ios 4.3).

   Has the base SDK changed? again, I cant find official info on it :/
   I expect xcode3 will be dead soon, however.

   is it easy enough to get up and running in Cocos2D if I bite the bullet? Is the template setup simple enough, and can I just open my projects and continue to work?

   ...and then theres ARC....not looking good

   Did you do a side by side installation with old Xcode? Is the cocos templates piece simple enough?

   Also, I thought you ad to disable Automatic Reference Counting in Xcode 4.2+?

   Unfortunately it looks like we're not going to have a choice in the matter. I was using Xcode 3.2.6 and after updating my iPhone 4 to iOS 5 today I got an error when I tried to test my app on the device. Xcode is forcing me to either restore to a previous iOS, or upgrade to Xcode 4. I'm going to try a dual-install of Xcode just to be safe, because I'm also worried about getting cocos2d working in Xcode4. When I tried to use the beta, I remember it being a nightmare.

   I've created the whole game ( Commander Pixman ) with Xcode 4 and cocos2d ( from 1.0.0-beta to 1.0.1 ), without much problems... It works well.

   iOS 5 requires new SDK, and older XCode ( not even older 4.x versions... ) won't work. Of course you can still create apps with iOS 4 SDK and submit them, but you won't be able to use new API's or, what is worst, you won't be able to install your app to iOS 5 device. At least I couldn't do this with iOS SDK 4.1 and iOS 4.3 device a couple of months before... So I think nothing changed in that matter with iOS 5...

   yesterday I've upgraded from Xcode 4.1 to 4.2, this was needed in order to recognise devices with iOS5 installed. For my project I had to tweak search paths manually, other than that build is smooth, and the app is working on devices with iOS5 without any issues so far.

    Quick update:

    I just finished installing Xcode4, and opened my project. Lots of new "issues" which I guess are what Xcode 4 calls warnings. The game successfully builds but refuses to run on the device or simulator :/

    The good news is that Xcode 3.2.6 is still in tact on the hard drive until I decide to uninstall it.

    May try a side by side installation..not sure how to install the templates. Is Arc an issue? I thought cocos2d wasnt ARC compatible, and you have to disable it in all .m filesin the cocos library? Is that not the case for 4.2+?

    ARC is not enabled unless you enable it for the compiler with the -fobjc-arc flag. You don't have to build with ARC enabled.

    I'm stumped with some silly problems -
    Can't install cocos2d-1.0.0-beta_templates.tar - I'm confused as to what I really should be doing.

    Installed iOS5 on my iPod 4th Gen, downloaded Xcode 4 - projects don't run whatsoever with normal templates and such. Doesn't have any errors in my older projects, just 'issues' but if I try and create a template now it is very messed up. :/

    Okay now I have some template running the default 'HellowWorld' - (I think it is beta-1.0.0 ) - with 7 issues of things like 'LLVM GCC 4.2 Warning' ...

    I could do with some advice as to what I need to probe/check/fix/tweak with this new setup before just manically copying files from one to the other. :/

    @Duckwit....now you are putting me off installing...keep me posted (if you dont mind). I have upgraded to IOS5, but not on my iPhone 4, just my iPad...may hold one device back.

    @indy2005 Don't let me put you off - I just really don't know my way around these compiler bugs. :P
    Situation Update:

    I can run the beta-1.0.0 template 'HelloWorld' - but copying my files and switching the App Delegate 'runWithScene' bit to my normal scene leads to a crash due to an Assertion failure that I can't work out - and points to a 'Thread 1' receiving a SIGBART. ...

    I'll get back if I figure it out.

    EDIT: Just to add, I LOVE the interface :D

    @indy2005 - Everything should be fine. I'm just stupid :P I didn't copy my Resources, only the classes DOH!
    There are still about 8-10 errors to do with deprecated features and obscure compiler warning, but it runs smooth.
    I'm about to investigate running a test version of iOS 4.3 on my 2nd Gen...

    EDIT: Just one error when compiling for my iPod 3rd/2nd Gen 8 GB - but it is a bit weird and I am not sure how to solve it.

    Starting to download XCode,so may take a while. Can I ask @duckwit what the install process is for the cocos2d templates, and if you did a side by side installation. I am not too hot with compiler settings either....

    I didn't do a side-by-side installation, and I used this cocos2d version as the Xcode 4 Templates, I followed Install Option A:

    EDIT: Just found out from this topic: http://www.cocos2d-iphone.org/forum/topic/21793#post-121119 -That you need to go to Toolbar > Product > Edit Schemes then for me both cocos2d and my project name were ticked, I unchecked 'cocos2d' and now it runs in the simulator.

    EDIT: Will not run on iPod 2G/3G 8GB - It goes like this '
    Building
    Build Succeeded
    Running *** on iDuckwit
    Finished Running on iDuckwit -All really quickly without actually started the application... but the 5.0 Simulator works fine. :)
    EDIT:Works fine in all the simulators (4.x,5.0) - but not on the device which has 4.2.1. Any clues?

    Duckwit, did you try messing around with the "Deployment" section in Build Settings? Specifically the "iOS Deployment Target" field.

    I had that "runs instantly but nothing is shown" problem a while ago. I think it was a case of the arm6 stuff not being built, only arm7, and I tried running on an arm6 device. It could also be a provisioning issue, I think.

    Hurf-uh-durhf... Still can't get it to work on my iPod 2G. (4.2.1).
    It just says 'Building' then 'Running' then 'Finished Running' and never shows any sign of running on the iPod.

    I fiddled with practically all the Build Settings and still nothing seems to happen.
    ANY other ideas as to what I could check into?

    This is something I just remember seeing on the interwebs somewhere, but check that Default.png is of the right size. Also, I think that if you have an Entitlements file and use a distribution scheme the get-task-allow setting in said file perhaps must be set to YES for it to work. Any difference between a debug and release build?

    Damn, I should have made a note somewhere as to what my problem really was. I was also fiddling with all kinds of settings to get it to run at all.

    I have half-solved the problem.
    Under 'Architectures' I had to manually the specify the string 'armv6' into the list - that makes the 'HellowWorld' complile properly onto the device.

    But with my actual project the cocos2d files are all messed up...
    They all have an error like this one:
    

    "_OBJC_METACLASS_$_CCSprite", referenced from:

    .... Aww nevermind...

    I made a new cocos2d-beta-1.0.0 template project and moved all my stuff into there and tweaked some build settings, now it works. :)

    Yeppers - Go to Build Settings > Find 'Architectures' sub-title, then under 'Architectures' click and choose 'Other'
    Then click the '+' in the (bottom left?) of the pop-up panel and type in the string "armv6". ;)

    I upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS5 and grabbed the latest X-Code yesterday. Was able to build and submit a few app updates with only a couple minor changes:

    - I had to add the armv6 architecture as people suggested (I just removed the existing value for this setting, and added "armv6" and then added "armv7" and that solved it.
    - I had an error with the libz.1.2.3.dylib framework, so I just had to remove it and re-add it. I must have added it wrong previously (not relative to current sdk), I'm guessing.

    Other than that, everything went smoothly.

    BAAAHH. What the heck is going on now?

    I am having a really stupid Code Signing error...
    I runs fine, then I quit the application, then I try running again and it gives me the error. If I then change any of the Code Signing values (even if I leave it as the same value, but click and select that value) it will work once, then break again.

    What should I do?
