Hi All
We have 10 sprites for digits 0 to 9 and want to create a single sprite on the fly with a given sequence of digits, eg. +50 pts etc. and then use this new sprite so we can scale, zoom and more.
Any pointers on how to do this with cocos2d iPhone 0.8.1
Any help much appreciated.
if they are normal sprites you could subclass sprite class and add all those sprites ass child of this sprite subclass and add this "container" instance as child of the layer if you apply an action to it it will be applied to its children.
At least it works for me :P

Have you tried using the renderTexture class? It may be what you are looking for, not really sure though

We need to convert to a sprite as our digits are sprites due to the colouring etc. we have applied in photoshop so cannot just be normal fonts. So I assume we take the code we need for LableAtlas to create the sprite object then use that.

LabelAtlas takes an image that you have laid out each glyph in a grid. So they can be as colorful and complicated as you like. It uses images of each letter, not a postscript or truetype font. So LabelAtlas may still be the way to go.

BitmapFontAtlas has more text features, I believe, but I think it's slower than LabelAtlas. I've only used LabelAtlas up to this point so I'm not really familiar with BitmapFontAtlas yet, but this is in the header for LabelAtlas:
A more flexible class is BitmapFontAtlas. It supports variable width characters and it also has a nice editor.Chris
If you already have fonts in bitmap format then LabelAtlas is way to go. But with LabelAtlas each of your letters will have equal width. If that doesn't trouble you, then go ahead.
I have another method I use when I want nice looking fonts with kerning. I use Hiero (or another tool you mentioned), adjust little x and y padding (if I want to add outlines or shadows in photoshop) and then save bitmap and kerning files. Then I import that bitmap font file in photoshop and add effects or whatever I need. With such font and kerning file you're free to go with BitmapFontAtlas. If happens that some of your letters looks wrong, just adjust a little kerning for specific letter directly in *.fnt file in xCode.

Speaking as a print production manager (and before that, a prepress technician), Gill Sans anything can be a nightmare. There are many versions of that font floating around and some just do not display properly.
From a design standpoint, I personally don't find it to be a very attractive font either. The lowercase 'i' always bugged the hell out of me with the small dot above it. There are plenty of non-Gill Sans fonts in a similar weight that will look (and probably work) a whole lot better. This is my opinion of course ;)
If you really need it and still can't get it to work, you could always try editing the bitmap file in Photoshop and manually placing the correct Gill Sans letter in the appropriate positions. A pain, I know...
