You can do local multiplayer. There are various two-player single-device apps out there, from the top of my head Pong Vaders and MultiPong.
Of course they are a different type of game but how about this -
Each side of the screen has 1 joystick in the center to control the ship, you would shoot automatically like in the Tilt mode and do co-op on a slightly smaller area.
Might be a bit pressed for space but with some thinking should be able to work something out. ;)
EDIT: Each person holds an end of the iphone and it would work in portrait - Only requires one finger from each person to play, so 2 fingers. Shouldn't cause too much blocking -

@lap.felix Holding an iPod in my hand right now, I think this would actually work really well. The joysticks don't need to be as accurate as the single-player, more arcade-ish, but having each joystick's area take up about 128 * 128 pixels at the center aligned with the edge of the screen on each end would work great. I like it! :)

Takes:
- Current position (vector) (N)
- Target position (vector) (E)
- Target movement (vector) (V)
- Speed (scalar) (lambda)
Return,
the minimum time to reach the target.
Example of usage:
For example, a good hunter should bear in mind the animal velocity vector, and the bullet speed, because the bullet speed is "slow".
For example taking the light speed as "infinity", you shouldn't take these parameters because the light would reach the target instantly.
