Hi,

There are many ways to contribute to the cocos2d project, for example:
* sending patches
* fixing bugs
* opening bugs
* suggesting features
* testing beta versions
* helping people on the forum
* and also, you can contribute financially :-)

This is the Store page , where you will be able to canalize your contribution in different ways:
* donating to the project
* buying the Sapus Tongue source code
* buying a cocos2d t-shirt

For those who don't know it, I'm working full time cocos2d, and my current income consists on donations and the sales of Sapus Tongue source code.

Riq, first thank You (and others involved) for everything you did for this project.

I have one stupid question though...

What would be considered as "decent" donation having in mind that my games doesn't make "decent" money on appstore. Fortunately, I don't have many production costs, but I am working almost all the day, and my other business is suffering. I would really like to donate but I am afraid it could end up as scornful act, and I really don't want that :)

Wow! I will certainly be buying a mug and t-shirt when I get paid next week : )

I love the fact you've gone with a site that you can customise the garment and position of the image (and add your own images to cross brand with cocos2d!).

Just to check, if I customise the shirt, do you still get (at least) the same amount of money? I don't want to do you out of any of the proceeds!

This is a great way to get small donations & finances in, while some of us are hoping to make proper donations when projects are completed.

Selling mugs and shirts will not help Riq so much in term of money, but will help in spreading the Cocos2D brand. And that's important for sure.

Btw Riq, I sent you email about one idea for getting more donations... If you like it and if it's doable, you can name the whole campaign "Learn and Earn" :)

@PhilM: yes, on zazzle you can set the percentage to earn from the sale. The percentage for the cocos2d products is 10%.
So if you initially select a mug that cost 15$, but then you select another mug that costs 19$, then earnings will be 1.9$

@crmagicxxx: yea, its not going to be alot, but lots of small incomes add up, and as you say, it helps the cocos2d brand that is forming nicely!

The drupal CMS system has/had an un-offical percentage scheme, where developers pledged (if they wanted to), to give a small percentage of proceeds back to the project. I know alot of developers here are hobbyists, and so perhaps won't generate enough to do this, but I think some might be able to. I plan to base my personal project donations like that, and have a small commissioned project that I'll be making a contribution from when its submitted and the client pays (hopefully soon!)

@riq: Great idea; bought a shirt. Sure to be a hit at user's groups meetings.

Have you thought of making another game w/ source code to sell? Perhaps in a more popular genre, such as castle defense or "space shooter" or whatever? I suspect it would be a bigger seller.

Thanks for the UK link.

Any chance you could add a 'happy and angry' mug, with one pic on either side of it?

I tried to customize one just now, but would need to upload the image myself, as it doesn't seem to let me add your happy image to the angry mug, and uploading one might mean the alignment would be different.

@fpc: I'm experimenting with box2d + svg to see how easy/difficult is to build a plataformer game. probably this experiment will end in a game.

@riq: So any timeframe on how long it would be before you release the box2d / svg game source for sale? I'm waiting on a check to arrive for some work I did, and once it does, I've been planning on buying the Sapus Tongue source... Will people that bought the Sapus Tongue source get the source to this one as well, or would it be another product? I only wonder as I'm playing around quite a bit with this same idea myself, and I'm sure my approach is no where's near as good as yours ;-) Thanks!

For the moment it is just an experimental game.
It helps me understand how robust/weak is cocos2d for plataformer games. And based on this feedback I will improve cocos2d for plataformer games.

For the moment I'm focusing on features: I'm trying to understand what's the easiest way to create a plataformer game. Can we use existent editors ? Should we have a new one ? Should we have a PlatafomerNode ? etc...

If this experimental game becomes a real game (probably in 2 months), I think it will be a new product, but I'm not sure yet. But I'm sure that customers who had bought Sapus Tongue sources will have a discount or something.

Hi Riq, not sure if I should be sending an open letter on this topic but I wanted to suggest that you re-think your licensing scheme. I think you've reach the "fork in the road" where you either charge for the library, or leave the library free and charge for tools -- a cocos2D Platformer Editor like GameSalad?

I work in an industry in which we chose the second route (and make good money on tools...) but somehow I think charging for commercial use of the cocos2D library makes more sense. If you do charge for the library, I would love to see a way to somehow have a "free" license available but force a link exchange so that apps with "paid" licenses are promoted.

Free is nice, but I hate the thought of you suffering at our expense. I'd like to hear your thoughts about building a revenue stream.

well, I think that you should have a double license, like Unity for example

say - if you earn above 50-100k $ then you should give 5-10% of the profit to the cocos2d cause ;)

seriously, I dont think it would hurt those who earn a lot and would not be cruel to those who barely make anything at all. there were a few games made with Cocos2d that earned BIG money and I think they should donate (dunno, maybe they did). even 5-10% from some of those games (not gonna point my finger that's not the purpose of this thread) would give riq enough to further develop this great framework. we have agreement in our team that we will donate once we finally succeed on the AppStore

as for those who don't really get big profits - help with the code whenever you can

PS: new logos are SWEET, gonna buy a T-Shirt, hope it can be delivered to my place

I think cocos2d is successful because, among other things, it's open source.

cocos2d (the graphics engine) uses the "cocos2d license", but Cocos Denshion (the sound engine) has a more restrictive license. It more or less says that if you earn more than XXX per year you should donate YYY to cocos2d.

regarding having "professional tools", it's an option. I think everybody would benefit from an integrated level editor (like iTorque editor). Although it's a possible option, it is not even on my roadmap yet. And I don't know if it should be open source, closed sourced or have a license similar to CocosDenshion.

It's Xmas early. Finally received my two Cocos mugs and my OpenGl super bible.

thanks for the reminder ob1. I just ordered a large 'double' mug (thanks for adding that riq) & an evil t-shirt.

haha, enjoy the read of your book! I bought a copy of that just before I found cocos2d, so only every got a few chapters into it, haven't needed it since, although I'm sure it'll come in handy again in the future. It sure is a monster!
