I found it, believe it or not, reading blog discussions about how much people hate xcode. I used to love Xcode but I too have grown to hate it.. It sucks so hard it's painful. the code completion is the crappest I've ever seen anywhere, and don't get me started on it's selective warnings reporting.. yuk..

I didn't realize how much I hated it (I used to love it when I first started IOS) until I finished travelling and got back on eclipse. Now Eclipse has it's problems too - but man.. I can feel how much more productive I am with a decent IDE.. I hope that this appcode is what I'm looking for.. will report back soon..

it's ugly compared to xcode (and slower, but doesn't effect me on my 8gb macbook pro)..

but I think I'll be switching.. I'll report back how it goes.. opened my xcode project, built and ran off the bat.. runs well - already got so many features that xcode misses and the debugging is kickarse..

until Apple get's their finger out of their bum with xcode, I think I'll be on appcode..

I am a true xcode hater too. I think nothing gets under my skin more than xcode "tabs". Never got used to it, never will. The guy who invented them should burn. Also, as an eclipse guy I like to have all my favorite shortcuts set up. Where is delete/copy/move line or block in xcode?

Please leave some more thoughts about this new ide, I will look into it in some spare time.

i like it. i think its much better xcode... the tabs might not be as good as eclipse tabs but better then xcode tabs... and i don't think you can build ios with eclipse yet? you cant even move the sidebar from left to right in xcode?

also it gives a lot more warnings, which is helpful... just having the file open performs analysis (highlighted & tooltips in the scrollbar) and tells you if you have an unnecessary include file of if you are calling a method that is not available for your target os... or many other warnings

it also has a very nice formatting option that can make all file in a directory have exactly the same format... i don't think xcode has any formatting?

In order to compete with free XCode they should have better product. What are the best features which XCode lacks?

Hmm. Will have to check this out. It's been frustrating to watch Apple make Xcode (and Project Builder) more and more buggy over the last ~10 years. I know IntelliJ was pretty well spoken of in the Java world even in the presence of Eclipse.

I really don't have any complaints about XCode at all so I'm not sure what this buys you. Yes, some of the code completion stuff is annoying.

My biggest complaint is all of the provisioning/certificate nonsense - what a pain!

The biggest win for me is the improved refactoring support over what Xcode offers. The Code Assistance features are also nice.

I was thinking about picking up a copy for personal use, but the sale prices that are offered until Jan 2 are the same as the normal price currently. Is anyone else seeing this?

I will buy for re-factoring reason alone. Xcode has problem to refactor mixed Obj-C/C++ code. The price which I see is $69 (personal license).($99 after 2 days) I hope this guys will improve the product even more.

I tried it and really wanted to like it for a few days but thought it was really awful. It "basically worked", until you tried to actually do work with it, so not an improvement over Xcode there. All of it's big features also exist in Xcode and they are mildly broken in both. The debugger in AppCode was as broken as Xcode's where you end up relying on GDB commands if you actually want to get anything done (or when the UI simply is wrong (which is several times a day in my experience)). It also seemed to get somewhat confused with C constructs mixed into the code, despite those being very common in Obj-C code. So in the end, it was just as mediocre as Xcode, but cost money (although a very reasonable and modest amount).

Warning Rant incoming!
<rant>The biggest disappointment of it all was that it simply looked and felt like crap. It's a Java based IDE coded in SWT made to look and feel as much as possible like Eclipse... No thanks, I happily deleted Eclipse from my hard drive after I quit my last job. That piece of overcomplicated garbage can rot on somebody else's computer. The only reason I would want to use Eclipse is if I was programming in Java, which really requires an IDE if you want to be productive because it's intentionally not a powerful language to prevent it from confusing to junior programmers.</rant>

If you actually like Eclipse (ignoring the language specific integration with Java, because that is completely gone), you *might* like AppCode.

@slembcke Thanks! I have to admit that this is devastating review, the only good think seems to be price at this moment. App code gets confused on some my constructs: eg
