Most programmers ignore the Marketting factor in success of any piece of software, that's what it's all about. Not abou 1$ price of a game or 3$ price!
- higher the price the less you will make!
Many wont think to pay 1$ for an app but they will tinnk twice if the price is higher, I have downloaded many apps or games that are similar to find the one I like most, I am happy spending 1$ at apps, not happy about doing this with 3$ or 5$ apps!
- experiment to find what works
My app is on the app store for a month and it made 700$, a few more days and costs of my assets is paid, then I get paid for my time, which was for fun btw!And I haven't yet emailed a single site to promote my app, I should have but I am lazy, or I am just counting to see the effect of certain things I do intead of doing too mant things at once and not knowing their effect. Point to make, experiment to find what works and what works well!
- don't spend on ads in iPhone blogs or apps, they won't work, you won't get your money back, the same applies for google adwords as well. A well planned camplain can get you 200 clicks for only 30$ but not even 10 will convert in sales.
- considering that you build a nice app or game getting it reviewed by a popular site might do wonders to your sales
- don't ignore lite versions, they defiantly help generate sales and getting your app in a larger audience so you can catch some bugs faster as well.
- don't ignore the iPad, it's easier to get in the top 100 for the iPad rather than the iPhone and will surely help make. More sales, people apreciate paying once and playing a game on iPhone and iPad while not having to pay twice. A universal app is a selling point!
