Wow, big news!
I hope the future development of Cocos2d framework still continues! I love this framework!
wow! I think this is a good sign. May be zynga would spend some money on this frame work. Thats a massive company, much bigger than Rovio.
However, blizzard dint do anything to Box2D, right?. So nothing to worry. :D
Anyway, how did you find that article? Whats your take on this ? :D
Congratulations to Riq and Rolando, they deserved it a lot with their fantastic work in here :) but does it also mean that less time devoted for Cocos2d development?
I cant say how I found the article, but it kinda scares me.
As long as there's no Zynga splash screen / Direct fee to use cocos2d, I think this is fine.
If so, sad to say, but I'm re-branching an old version.
Nonetheless, congrats to Riq and Ronaldo for their successful career paths!
Big news. I'm sure Riq will come with an official announcement himself. Till then we can only speculate if and how this will affect cocos. Since I don't like to speculate, I'll wait until Riq elaborates about this.
Edit and of course congrats to Riq and Roland.
I am very happy for Ricardo but I am more scared that companies like Zynga will try to manipulate Cocos2d and try to make money off a free open source project. I have seen this a lot in the .NET community and I just hope this awesome framework (Cocos2d) is developed continuously and will continue to be free.
This is fascinating. Congratulations to Ricardo and Rolando.
From reading the article, it sounds like cocos2d itself will still be around, but I'd love to hear what @riq and company have to say.
Congratulations to Riq and Rolando!!!
Congrats - amazing news! Zynga are pretty big, I hear ;)
The announcement sounds positive on continuing the cocos2d open source project.
There has been previous examples of companies supporting -- then abandoning/spoiling -- open source frameworks, but without funds theres a risk that guys like Riq just cant continue, leaving the project in the lurch. ie theres a risk either way. I think its a great move.
Personally, I dont really care what the framework is called. Lets face it, we are using this amazing code (and the contributor's time/effort) for free. Riq/Rolando being happy + funded == continued cocos goodness for us.
Great news for riq and rolando...but wonder where this leaves levelsvg customers?
Wow! Cocos2D finally grew up. Congratulations to Riq and Rolando, great job!
Congratulations on the big news! Hope everything goes well for the both you defiantly deserve it!
Good Luck!
David.

what mean this for cocos2d?
Congratulations, glad all your hard work put you in a position where you can make some money off of it, and good luck :)
Cool! big congrats to Riq and Rolando :)
Gonna wait for an announcement before adding to the speculation (though I believe Zynga have plans to put cocos2d into firmware and implant it into toasters and hairdryers).
awesome news!! :)
Under the agreement, the developers, Ricardo Quesada from Argentina, and Rolando Abarca from Chile, will work at Zynga's San Francisco office. The developers used to work at Sapus Media, which was acquired in the deal. No financial terms of the deal were disclosed.
Zynga said it would not be acquiring cocos2d, which is a free game engine that developers use to make games for Apple devices such as the iPhone, the iPad and iPod touch.
Hi Everyone -
Looks like you've seen the exciting news (http://zyngablog.typepad.com/zyngacom/)
Just want to confirm that Rolando and I will continue to support and contribute to Cocos2d for iPhone and the site will be managed separately from Zynga.
Thanks for your support and we look forward to the continued success of Cocos2d.
Congrats Riq, hope you both are making a boatload of money and that it works out well! =)
Will this change the project map of cocos2d? (i.e. more focus on cross-platform, etc?)
Congrats riq!!!
Congrats riq, you deserve every success. Is levelSVG now under ownership of zynga, and how will it affect the roadmap for levelSVG?
First of all, let me say congrats to Riq, who defiantly deserves this for all of his hard work.
Now on the the speculation.
I could be way off base here, but I think this will effectively be the end of meaningful cocos2D updates. We all know that Zynga is cutthroat when it comes to business practices, and has attacked and effectively ruining independent games and developers everywhere.
Call me a zealot, but this is the part where cocos2d and myself will part ways - anything the Zynga touches ends up useless for the rest of the world. Cocos2D may be an open source project, but Zynga with either find a way around it, or have Riq working on something proprietary - mark my words.
Big news up here in the SF Bay Area -- Riq & Ricardo: congratulations! Glad to finally see the world taking notice of the work you've done to change gaming, not just mobile gaming, for the world. Glad to have been a part of that. --yarri
Well, logically, it would seem that Riq/Rol will be using Cocos2D for Zynga games, which hopefully means more bug fixes and feature getting rolled in, if Zynga permits.
"Zynga with either find a way around it, or have Riq working on something proprietary - mark my words"
-I hope not. At least Cocos2D will be at v1.0 though, so we'll have something.
@riq, congrats :) ! Will you work in SF?
1) Massive congratulations for Riq and Roland ! I've been amazed countless seeing their commitment to a non-paid effort. I remember when we were choosing 2D framework for our company over 2 years ago and what a progress cocos2d made since then ! I honestly don't know how to appreciate everything Riq has done here. I really wish someone made a comprehensive list one day - how many games are based on Cocos2d and how many developers use it. One thing I'm sure of though - games based on Cocos2d earned many, many millions $ :)
2) I don't like Zynga :( Let's face it - Farmville ? Copy of a Chinese online game. Mafia Wars ? Copy. Zynga Poker on iPhone ? There's a thread at TA that shows how they simply copied the UI from another developer. That's a company that shamelessly ripped many people and it just seems weird seeing someone so greatly open to helping others become employee of... Well, Zynga
I honestly and sincerely hope Cocos2d will live on and continue to be what it is now - the greatest 2D tool on the planet :)
Congrats to Riq and Roland! Awesome times ahead for them, I'm certain.
For all the people worrying about cocos2d, just a couple of points:
If the current code base is doing what you want, then don't worry, be happy! Just use it and make great stuff. We know the current code base can make great stuff, so nothing is going to stop you continuing that trend!
Worrying about lack of future updates? Well, I'm sure Riq and Roland are going to be keen on continuing work on it, but even if the Real World gets in the way of their contributions, we all have the source code. Everyone can contribute. Project staff come and go, go through periods of activity and inactivity, but the source is open, and you or someone else can come along and update it and improve it. And I suspect this community is far too large and vibrant to let it die.
Now stop worrying, buy the dudes a beer, and resume coding ;)
Congrats to Riq and Roland, I'm pleased your hardwork and dedication over the years has been rewarded through the Sapus Media acquisition.
Great news for the Zynga mobile team to have you guys on board.
Also nice to see studio acquisitions outside of SF Bay, *hint* *hint* ;-)
