JamYourFace is an app we recently released that is built on cocos2d 6.2. In a nutshell, it lets you make interactive scenes called Jams using photos from your Facebook account, iPhone, or iPod Touch.

You attach people's faces to animated bodies, dress them up, and make them dance and talk. You can share these Jams online using email, Facebook, or the JamYourFace website, and anyone with a web browser can view them.

I thought I'd write a post to show how cocos can be used outside of just games! We make extensive use of Actions to create a Flash-like animation environment that uses keyframes and loops. There's a dance editor included with the app that lets you play around with this animation technique.

That looks really cool but how about feeding some of that technology back into the community? I've seen lots of posts on the old forum where people are interested in using segments of photos as sprites so some info (preferably code) would be great. Also your animation technique looks very interesting - IMHO one weakness of cocos2d at the moment is that it is very hard to animate groups of sprites, so again any tips or code would be much appreciated.

If you support the cocos2d community you may find we are much more likely to support you ;)

We don't plan to open-source any code at this time. However, I've been a member of the cocos2d community for several months, contributing when I have something that might be helpful.

Transferring photos to sprites is quite easy and is well explained in the forums. The trickier part is cutting pieces from photos, but that's an image processing problem that is unrelated to cocos2d. You can find some good code snippets if you do a search in the official iPhone development forums.

As for animating groups of sprites, the trick is to take advantage of node hierarchies, transform anchors, and the Spawn action for animating multiple things at the same time. It takes some work and creativity to put these all together. I think it'd be a good candidate for a mini-tutorial.

Actually he said he preferred code, but I agree with you coolman. If there's some interest in the mini-tutorial that I suggested, then that would be a good way to share some techniques.

Really impressive app. Had a similar idea a while back, but never followed the prototype through.

Very interested in your mini tutorial on your animation techniques!
Would be nice to get a more Flash like experience on the iPhone.

vutronic: The class you're looking for is UIImagePickerController. You should find lots of examples on the web. This will give you a UIImage, which you can easily convert to a Sprite using [Sprite spriteWithCGImage: myImage.CGImage]. Hope that helps!
