Path for command line tools in the Terminal window

I don't feel very smart right now and I need help.

I have a command-line tool (PVRTexTool) that I want to install in some magic Mac directory, such that when I open the Terminal window and type "PV<tab>", the Mac will magically divine that I mean "PVRTexTool" and will run it from the appropriate place. Where do I copy the tool? Another way to ask the same thing, where on earth does Mac look for its supported list of commands?

I'm pretty sure the terminal runs (by default) a bash shell. So you can set or change 'PATH' in your '.bash_profile'.
