Hello,
I've been looking for a similar 2D game framework on the android platform, and I haven't found anything yet. After looking around, I'm pretty sure there is nothing like cocos2D there.
I understand the workload it represents to port cocos2D to java but I really think that's a wining move for cocos2D. Having the possibility to port all cocos2D games to androids in a few days, would be totally awesome. For cocos2D and for the andoid market place too.

Are they other people like me thinking abuot porting their games to the android platform ? I

I was pondering it, but thinking it might be complicated without the Cocos engine and in a different language.

Anyway I am interested if something good is possible.

I looked into Android a month or so back. Does anyone know if they've fixed the serious security issue, with no games being encrypted, its supposed to be really easy to pass a copy of a game around, once you've got it off the device. Thats a little worrying theirs no protection (although I appreciate you can't stop piracy, they could have at least put some simple security precautions in, rather than rely on system permissions).

Other than that, I'd love to look to port some stuff to Android, although theres obviously a fair few different style handsets and input types, so testing might not be as easy as the iphone.

It seems like I read something about the android platform only supporting OpenGL 1.0 right now. What parts of cocos2d rely on OpenGL 1.1?

Actually, just to let you guys know, OpenGL ES 1.1 extensions have been available sine Android 1.1. I'm halfway guessing you'll see 2.0 support in Donut, the upcoming OS update. As of right now, devices like the HTC Dream (aka T-mobile G1) support the last OS update (1.5) and have OpenGL ES 1.1 hardware acceleration. I've been developing on the platform for the last several months, and though I opted not to use array buffer objects in my last project, I did implement and test ABO for vertices and texture storage.

This leads me to my question: is there sufficent interest in an Android port of cocos2d, and has anyone started in that direction? Because I am keen on getting in on that action. I wrestled with Android's GL implementation strengths and weaknesses for months and I think a strong optimized 2D engine like cocos2d is just android needs. Contact me if anyone is interested in figuring this out.

I'd like to see a port as well. Android has a lot of potential to be another money-making platform for developers once more phones are released and the expected changes come to the Market.

@nemyhlovecraft: How do you find OpenGL performance on Android compared to the iPhone? I'd expect a lot of overhead due to using Java rather than Obj C, but I guess it depends on the specific app...

Does it really need to be in Java ? I have seen that another game engine written in c++ works on Android.

This article states you can use c/c++ but mentions:

"The NDK will enable developers to code some of the performance-sensitive parts of their programs in C and reuse existing C code on the Android platform. It comes with some limitations, however, and is not intended to serve as a full alternative to Android's Java development model."

Sounds cool. Looking at the commits and source, it seems most files are stubs, and seems to be concentrated on basic rendering right now. So doubt its usable for production yet, but nice to see someones made a start!

It's not exactly a direct port of cocos2d to Android but it looks like it will have a very similar feature set.

There is also http://kenai.com/projects/pisces for a Android 2D engine. Didn't try it though.

Are the licenses of those engines compatible with closed source games ? Seems to be GPL, making commercial games not possible.

I'm sure that most features work now, and some left to test.

I have only Nexus One and Tattoo, pretty sure cocos2d-android works on these two platform. And there is already a cocos2d game in android market.

Some comment says it doesn't work on Galaxy S, but I have no machine to verify.

I'm currently porting my rejected game to Android using cocos2d from http://code.google.com/p/cocos2d-android/. I only started last night but I'm impressed so far. It appears that there are 2 different ports to android happening here. The link above and yours @ http://code.google.com/p/cocos2d-android-1/. Have you guys discussed working together?

It is based on cocos2d-iphone-0.82, It is not updated often, and I contacted with them, and no reply..

Mine is based on cocos2d-iphone-0.99.4. I'd like to finish all its features in the coming month, but I'm not very sure.
