I'm challenging myself to make a simple game within a week. I've only been using Cocos2D for a week or two so this could get messy.

If you're interested in my progress I'm blogging about it at my website http://www.fizzyprops.com, follow along and PLEASE comment and suggest what I may or may not be doing wrong. The best work I've done was part of a team and going alone is daunting.

I'll also be posting updates here as well, so lets see what comes from this...

I can make an app in 1 day. Based on apps I created before. (surely its quality is just -acceptable)

It depends on what app you want to make and how much support you have.

Do you have a plan for the path drawing component? I think this will be more trouble than you realize, if you don't.

I'm expecting everything to be more trouble than I realize. I'm ready for it, or I should say ready to not be ready for it. Thanks for letting me know that this might be the harder part of the project. I'll get to that section of the build sooner rather than later now.

Not on this one, but once this 'project' is done I'd love to see what we can make.

Cool, that sounds great. I understand a descent amount of cocos2d, made one app, mainly with UIKit but incorporated cocos2d into it. I actually haven't made any other apps since my first as I am working full time at the moment.

Okay, time to start work on getting my sprites to follow the lines. That is... after I watch the Vancouver Canucks game.

Well that was interesting...

The tricky part was learning about a whole whack of things I just haven't dealt with before. Lots of time was spent trying to use Box2d linear impulses to move the sprite and the body around the screen. It worked, just not well. So this morning I ripped out what I worked on yesterday and started using actions. That ended up being way easier.

Impressive for a week's work (okay, impressive for a month's work, too). Reminds me a little of Super 7, which is an old favorite of mine. I'm really impressed by the smooth lines and how naturally the balls appear to be following the lines. I've never done a line drawing game, but I've always heard that those are both tough to get right. Looks like you nailed it.

I would suggest you might want to allow *ahem* bigger balls. This would increase the difficulty if you make big balls, since they will take up more of the screen (Super 7 does something like this), but you could score bigger points with bigger balls. (Sorry, I'll stop saying "big balls now")

I'd also suggest the game over condition should be when you put a ball in the wrong color receptacle (the line ends in a wrong bucket) or when you make an "ugly" color, like how Trainyard takes a bad mix and makes it a poo brown color. Since you wouldn't be able to do anything with it, it would be "Yuk! Game Over".

Good job - I'm looking forward to playing it!

Thanks! I'll be finishing up the project and Dragyn, I'm definitely going to implement your idea about the bigger balls. My favorite comment on the blog was 'Your mom likes random ball entry' so I feel your pain with the 'big balls' issue. I should have just called them sprites from the start, regardless I had to delete the comment for my little british mothers delicate tastes.

What I learned was it's great to hack out an idea really quick and get something playable. Then you can tweak and polish for a while based on outside input.

Any idea for a name anyone? So far all i've got is 'Red-Yellow-Blue'.

How about "Growing Some Balls"? Might get the rude-minded buyers who get it for the name only, if you can get that name past Apple... Okay, don't take that as a serious suggestion (unless you really like it).

Sorry, I'm always struggling with names for my projects, too.

Sometimes writing out everything you can think of, and then try mashing words together or inventing hybrids of existing words. (I'm sure somewhere along the line, some of the devs thought "Angry Birds" was a silly, stupid name.)
