Hey guys, just found a website that does just what Questor wants for free, and might be useful to others as well: http://imagesplitter.net/

You upload an image (not exceeding 20mb), select Splitter and input how many rows and columns of sprites are in the image. It will then spit out a ZIP file containing all the individual frames while also preserving the alpha channel. I just tried it yesterday and it seems to work just fine!

I made a small python script that uses the Python Imaging Library (PIL) to split up a spritesheet into its component images for my art department a few months ago.

It uses a pretty Tk based GUI so it should be cross platform but i've only tested it on MacOS.

You can download the small app from Github: http://github.com/AsadR/SSEX

You'll need a python interpreter and the PIL library installed.

Not sure, but I am fairly new to GIMP. There is an imagemap capability that (in a new window, with separate controls) seems to make guides in a grid format, but then it doesn't have the slice function available. As for the main window, I don't see anyway to snap a guide to a grid, though you can snap a selection to either a gridline or a guide.

There may be a plugin to allow it, but as I said, I am hardly an expert at Gimp.

Regards,

Thanks for the info guys.

@Sama7 I am probably one of that last people on the planet that doesn't own Photoshop (or Fireworks), but your post helped me figure out how to do it in Gimp. I had scanned the menus many times looking for "splitter", etc, but after I read your post I looked again and found the "Slice" option. So basically it appears that I can do the same thing with Gimp; setup the guides and then use the Slice tool to cutup and save the individual pieces.

Unfortunately it appears that although Gimp has great grid maker, the slice tool only uses the guides...if it instead could be made to use the grid lines, it would make slicing up spritesheets even easier. But the guides are not too bad as Gimp allows easier creation of guides by clicking on the top and side rulers and dragging down (or sideways). Still a PITA, and alot more work than making a quick grid (or running a splitter by specifying an offset and tile dimensions), but it sure beats individual cut and pastes.

If you ever do write that utility for splitting automagically, please send me a PM as I would still find it very useful. As I said previously, there are several splitter utilities on the web, but most lose the transparency channel, so I think a good splitter that handles transparency would be great.

Best Regards,

Ha, I made a post asking if anyone would be interested in a tool to do this and people came back satisfied with photoshop + zwoptex.

1. Open image in photoshop
2. View | New Guide
3-x. : Insert vertical & horizontal guide lines to split up the sheet (I just divide the image dimensions by # of frames and use those values for where the place the guides)
4. Select slice tool
5. Choose "Slice from guides"
6. File | Save For Web & Devices
7. Save Images Only

There ya go, a sliced spritesheet. Huge PITA no matter what people here might argue, I'm shocked there isn't a cocoa app for doing this already dealing with just spritesheets. I guess I'll look at finishing mine, I had put it aside since no one seemed interested.

The title pretty much says it all. ;-)

Does anyone know a good Tile spritesheet (32bit PNG) splitter that handles transparency? I have found a few PNG splitters but either they don't handle PNG files or if they do, they lose the alpha/transparency channel.

I am just looking for something that can take a sheet of sprites (laid out in a grid) and split them up into individual sprite PNG files, while retaining the alpha/transparency channel.

If anyone know of a good utility that can do this, or knows how it can be done with GIMP (batch style), I would really appreciate the help/info.

Thanks,
