@Riq

Paid support is a fantastic idea. I would be a customer. My ISP does it this way:

Customer buys prepaid support points.

Support points are spent when the support tech answers your question. Generally, 1 point per issue. However, if it is a difficult or time consuming question, the tech can charge more points.

Questions can be made "urgent" at the expense of more points.

@Adam: Thanks for the suggestions. I don't have plans to change the license. In fact the next release will have a more open license: MIT.
I don't want to force anyone to pay me a percentage of his revenues, but if he/she receives a big check from Apple, I wouldn't mind receiving a nice donation :-)

For the moment I'm making ends meet. I'll continue to improve LevelSVG/Sapus Tongue so users keep purchasing it, and I might offer some kind of "professional" support in the future.

@yarri

I agree with yarri, it's time to rethink the license scheme for Riq's sake and all of ours. I was a business school graduate before I was a programmer. Please indulge me :)

The problem:

Riq deserves to make a living from his work on cocos2d

We need cocos2d support

As it stands now, Riq is working full time on cocos2d. His only real revenue is the source code for sapas tongue (mugs don't count, he only gets %10 of the sale).

Therefore, there is an economic incentive for him to put his efforts into documenting the source code that he sells, but there is no incentive for him to offer help elsewhere. The help he so generously offers for free in the forum and the wiki is just a reflection of his good character.

I see two alternatives for revenue that gets everyone what they want:

Riq writes a book on cocos2d. It includes code samples, best practices, etc. This has been done before with other game engines, like SIO2. With the growing popularity of cocos2d, someone is going to write this book eventually. It should be Riq.

License the game engine as a percentage of sales. Include a floor level of course to encourage people to learn it. But, if your game makes above $X, you become contractually obligated to kick back Y%. I like this because Riq is now a partner in the success of your game. And because Riq is a partner, we all become partners, and want to help each other.

What do you all think?

I know I would certainly use it to buy games announced in the new games forum. And it would be nice to see a percentage of that revenue sent back to the cocos2d project.

thanks for the suggestions.
I think cocos2d is successful because, among other things, it's open source.

cocos2d (the graphics engine) uses the "cocos2d license", but Cocos Denshion (the sound engine) has a more restrictive license. It more or less says that if you earn more than XXX per year you should donate YYY to cocos2d.
http://www.cocos2d-iphone.org/wiki/doku.php/cocosdenshion:license

regarding having "professional tools", it's an option. I think everybody would benefit from an integrated level editor (like iTorque editor). Although it's a possible option, it is not even on my roadmap yet. And I don't know if it should be open source, closed sourced or have a license similar to CocosDenshion.

[Updated]: I'm discussing how to integrate box2d objects with cocos2d here:
http://www.cocos2d-iphone.org/forum/topic/2005
The "professional tool" would be scenario c

well, I think that you should have a double license, like Unity for example

say - if you earn above 50-100k $ then you should give 5-10% of the profit to the cocos2d cause ;)

seriously, I dont think it would hurt those who earn a lot and would not be cruel to those who barely make anything at all. there were a few games made with Cocos2d that earned BIG money and I think they should donate (dunno, maybe they did). even 5-10% from some of those games (not gonna point my finger that's not the purpose of this thread) would give riq enough to further develop this great framework. we have agreement in our team that we will donate once we finally succeed on the AppStore

as for those who don't really get big profits - help with the code whenever you can

PS: new logos are SWEET, gonna buy a T-Shirt, hope it can be delivered to my place

Hi Riq, not sure if I should be sending an open letter on this topic but I wanted to suggest that you re-think your licensing scheme. I think you've reach the "fork in the road" where you either charge for the library, or leave the library free and charge for tools -- a cocos2D Platformer Editor like GameSalad?

I work in an industry in which we chose the second route (and make good money on tools...) but somehow I think charging for commercial use of the cocos2D library makes more sense. If you do charge for the library, I would love to see a way to somehow have a "free" license available but force a link exchange so that apps with "paid" licenses are promoted.

Free is nice, but I hate the thought of you suffering at our expense. I'd like to hear your thoughts about building a revenue stream.
