I think you should do more calculation than just the cost of the iPad2.

- How long shall you make a game/app?

- When the iPad2 will be available ?

- When the iPad2 will be popular ?

- Can you upgrade your app from iPad1 to iPad2?

Don't just focus on tiny things, you will miss your chance.

I'm soon going to buy a new iPad for development, should i wait for the iPad 2 to come out so that they maybe will lower the prices of the first iPad? I dont think that i can afford the iPad 2 since i think that it will be much more expensive than the first iPad.

What do you think?

Uhm, why not you monetize your blog and earn money from AdMob? And you will be able to buy the iPad 2 for sure. I am using WPmob Lite to monetize my website, so far so good. But the WPmob Pro is so much better (supports iPad).

Okey, thanks for all your answers! I think that i will wait until april-may somewhere and if they havent announced the ipad 2 then i will buy the first iPad.

I agree that he should wait, but I don't think it's gonna be a month or two.
In my opinion we will see the new iPad around May.

Also, this time last year we already got an announcement on the iPad, and there isn't any word of a "special keynote" in the near future.
Plus, I think that Steve Jobs will want to give that Keynote, and he's not feeling well now (and possibly for a while).

So I dunno... I think it's gonna be in May, and I still say he should wait :)

I say wait. For now program and test in the simulator. The old ipad will only be new for a month or so, the new ipad will be new for a year or so from when you get it. If you can handle using the simulator for a month two, just wait :)

There'll be new models introduced all the time. Unless the iPad2 will be coming out in a month or two, stick with whatever's available now.

The iPad 2 is not likely to be out until April. If it's an option where you are, you can buy a used/refurbished 16GB original iPad to save some money.

But they also kept the memory the same at 256mb, and used a lower quality (not lower resolution) display than the iPhone 4 to keep the price the same. I don't think they can skimp on the iPad the same way -- the iPad already struggles with its 256mb, and since the new screen is a highlight, they can't skimp on it either. I think the price would have to go up for QXGA (2048x1536) iPads.

Right now there are 6 different iPad models: 16/32/64GB, with and without AT&T 3G. Assuming the reported 3G chipset from Qualcomm which works with both Verizon and AT&T's networks, that doesn't increase the number of models from 6 to 9. So how could they keep the same number of models while adding a higher resolution display?

Just speculation.

I'd like to see the QXGA display because the current iPad is hard to read up close (say, lying in bed). But that added resolution would benefit from higher resolution movies and graphics, so there's little point in an "iPad HD" with 16GB of memory. I think 16GB/wifi/XGA will stick around for a low entry level price point. Don't know if any of it will happen, but I'd like to see QXGA this year. QXGA as an option helps the iPad compete against other tablets and eReaders -- why buy a Kindle and an iPad when you can just get an iPad with a sharper screen?

When you say "Retina Display", do you mean 300ppi? Because on the iPad that would be extremely expensive.

I suppose there will be improved resolution, but I don't think it will be a "retina display".

iPad 2 might have a slightly better processor and a camera but I don't think we will see the retina display. Though, I could be wrong. I think that Apple will try to keep the second genration iPad as close to the price as the original.

I highly doubt that the iPad 1 will be sold for a lower price when the new one comes out. Apple tends to put out a new model for the same or similar price, and the old one goes out of production.

If you want to get an iPad for testing against the current iPad user base, I'd get one now. The iPad is, IMHO, just expensive enough that it won't be as much of an "impulse upgrade" for users like you see with iPod Touches and iPhones.

Obviously, the best answer for a dev is to buy one of everything, so you can test across the board, but that can be cost prohibitive, given Apple's aggressive "new model" strategy.
