A word of notice

As the lead developer of cocos2d and with the aim of avoiding any misunderstanding or the creation of false expectations  I, Ricardo Quesada, would like to clarify that I am not associated or related in any way whatsoever with Steffen Itterheim (AKA gaminghorror) or his site.

I never asked for his endorsement and I don’t want it. Whatever he has done or might be doing regarding cocos2d, he is acting on his own.

  • So are you saying his book is bad?

  • @tehsuck: Does it say the book is bad anywhere? There is no information that you can deduce about the quality of the book, wether good or bad. The official cocos2d lead developer is distancing himself from Steffen Itterheim, nothing more, nothing less.

  • Hi Riq,

Can you perhaps clarify what the issue is about ?
Just like “tehsuck”, I too am a bit confused about what this is about,
as I’m sure others probably are as well.

  • @Feliz @tehsuck: It’s pretty much what @Hactar said.

  • needs help with cocos2d? don’t buy the book, don’t email Riq, he is way too busy I am sure (thank you for cocos2d by the way Riq, IT RAWKS !!!), if you need help learning cocos2d read the wiki, forums and/or join us in IRC chat:
    irc.freenode.org:6667 #cocos2d-iphone

    C u there

    Carl aka ubert :D

  • @riq
    Oke :)
    Thanks for the response.

  • If you need some great examples of Cocos2d, you should buy Riq’s source code here: http://www.cocos2d-iphone.org/store

    Just sayin’.

  • @Hactar – I am not deducing anything, I am very confused by this post by @Riq. It just seemed like a completely random thing to post without any explanation to people of the community who have no idea who Steffen Itterheim is (I don’t know who he is nor do I really care). If someone “distances” themselves from something or someone there must be a reason? I don’t really care but when you post something like this on a very prominent project’s homepage, it’s bound to make people who don’t spend hours in the forums scratch their collective heads.

If Riq doesn’t want people asking about this, why even post it? Doesn’t make a ton of sense to me. That’s all – carry on!

  • The reason fpr all this is that this guy Steffen is selling a pack of sourcecode (aka line drawing starterkit) and riq doesnt like the idea (probably because he sees it as competition to sapus tongue). Even though Steffen endorsed cocos2D prominently on his blog (which he removed after riq wrote he does not want this). When the starterkit went on sale recently – promoted via newsletter and twitter riq blocked Steffen’s access to the cocos2D Forum.

Now pls correct me if i missed anything here.

But guys pls, why dont you just *work together*. For the good of the two of you and to the benefit of the community. Maybe have Steffen pay a % of his sales to riq, whatever…

  • @tehsuck – if you don’t know or really don’t care, why even post? Besides, it is unto riq to post whatever he wants. If you are really curious, go do some searching around instead of wasting your time posting worthless opinion of yours.

  • Please guys, take it easy. Everyone is entitled to give his/her opinion. But please, don’t make aggressive remarks.
If you don’t know the site of gaminghorror, then ignore my post. If you do, please know that I have no relationship or any kind of association with him. Since he was endorsing me as cocos2d lead developer, I found it deem to post this notice in the blog to avoid the community from creating false expectations or inaccurate ideas on a possible relationship between us. That’s it.

@robo: I think you might have misunderstood the whole point. Please read this entire thread for further info: http://www.cocos2d-iphone.org/forum/topic/6730 Thanks.

  • My bad riq.. just bothers hell out of me to see people not taking the time to actually find out for themselves what the hell is going on first and they just lash out their opinions. Yes they are free to make opinions, but at least they should try to understand why you decided to take such actions first.

  • @riq: yes, i know that thread. i’m following this issue since it started.

I do understand that you want to protect your business, i would do the same if i were you. On the other hand Steffen is just like you: He works with cocos2D, adds value to the community and wants to make a living as an indy dev.

I think people – like yourself and steffen – who not only talk about doing stuff, but actually *do* stuff (build a website, answer questions of users, share code, write articles, sell useful products, write books) are rare and should use every opportunity to join forces if they can.

Cocos2D would not be there if you were one of the “talk only” guys. You know that, ofcourse. And as the cocos2D eco-system gets bigger people like that are needed.

And Cocos2D will not use its full potential with the rise of the iDevice if the energy of people like Steffen (and of course others of the same type) is not used.
And this is my whole point: I would like to see cocos2D use its full potential !

I really think you guys just started on the wrong foot.
Just talk with each other about what is considered fair and make an arrangement.
And then – please – work together to advance cocos2D for all of us to use and enjoy.

    :)

  • @riq, I just want to comment from the perspective of an outsider coming here to check out cocos2d for the first time.

My first impression was a front page post featuring thinly veiled hostility toward another developer.

After reading this thread and the forum post on the topic I am somewhat sympathetic to your perspective, but this discussion should have remained on the forums. I should have spent this time learning about cocos2d instead of googling “Steffen Itterheim” and wondering why there’s a feud between you.

You’re giving someone with whom you have a disagreement oodles of attention, and you’re displaying all this unpleasantness right on the front page of this project that you care so much about. It doesn’t reflect well on your or your project.

As far as I can see robo is right when he says “Steffen is just like you: He works with cocos2D, adds value to the community and wants to make a living as an indy dev.” Leave it at that and focus on your product.

  • Or you could view it as someone wishing to make it clear that there is no relationship between the two trading entities ‘Riq’ and ‘Steffen’.

I’m pretty sure if I started selling ‘Mike’ branded goods and then endorsed ‘Nike’ on the same page that at the very least Nike would want to distance themselves from me (while firing up their lawyers at the same time).

I guess Riq doesn’t want to be fielding questions from people who’ve bought a product from Steffen, let alone dealing with queries when the underlying cocos2d code changes, by clearly stating this up front he now doesn’t have to.

    …and relax

  • @bambamyi – sorry for “wasting your time” by posting my “worthless opinion.” Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays!

@riq Can’t you re-license Cocos2d for iPhone so that it’s freely distributable / usable in commercial products but source cannot be re-sold?

  • This post comes off as very aggressive towards Steffen to be honest.
And personally I think it’s kinda uncalled for, Steffen is a valuable source to new Cocos2D devs and the post sells him off as a bad guy without any real reason given..

  • Thanks for your comments.

As I mentioned before, this post was only meant to avoid any misunderstanding or the creation of false expectations regarding my involvement with him and his site. And I posted it because there is (or was?) a big banner in his site saying he was endorsing me. Just that.

I’m not hereby making any value judgements about him personally, his site or his work.

  • I personally think anyone whining and placing ‘in my opinion’ around their comment towards Riq and his desires to distance himself, which he clearly said and nothing more (not HIS fault YOU are assuming) need to go outside and get some sunlight. Feel bad for Riq as I was in a similar situation several months ago.

Riq keep your chin up. Keep doing what you’re doing, making cocos2d the great library it is! Those who don’t matter will make a volcano out of an ant hill and are not worth your time or concern. Those of us who care know what you meant, which is exactly what you said will continue to support you.

  • There’s a way to communicate a message in a neutral and informative manner and this sure wasn’t it.
It doesn’t matter what you say. It matters how you say it.

Should this post only be meant to inform visitors about the fact that there is no connection between the two parties,
then what you want or not is irrelevant.

By expressing that you, personally, do Not want any endorsement from Steffen, you’re also stating that Steffen is acting in a manner which you find offending.

If you want to express disrespect towards Steffen, then you’re spot on.
But it’s recommended to leave opinions out of informative posts.

I could just as well say “Well I don’t use cocos2D because I don’t want anything to do with the developers or what they stand for. ”
This takes my credit as a person and puts my values and states that You hold an opposite opinion. Should I be promoting open source, freedom of information and helpful blogging, I am indirectly saying that Your’e not.

  • Yawn…..My $0.02……

Let us move on from this. Riq has made his point and that is that. abitofcode’s NIKE/MIKE analogy seems spot on to me. Fragmentation is a way of life on things like this. Hopefully we can maintain the original as the best and make sure no large corporate entity takes it and monetizes it in the near future.

Steffen’s book will probably expose many developers who “have to have a book” to Cocos2d development. Maybe even move Cocos2d into the classroom. This is a good thing.

That being said, no book can take the place of a strong, inviting, knowledgable development community. We need to spend our time being that.

    Well wishes to all…

  • It’s amazing to see the childishness and whining on this forum.

First, M.E., why don’t you just simply leave this forum and go somewhere else if you don’t like Riq’s posts. We certainly don’t need your commentary or opinions on that. Lets clue you in for a moment. This is his baby, his puppy, and he do whatever he wants. If you don’t like it, leave. Use a different framework. Develop for another platform…

    The immaturity is staggering!

  • I really wonder if this product will evolve to the next stage and use its potential. Some comments give me hope, some not so much… ;)

  • Just wanted to say to David, well put. I didn’t read your response earlier, but you said is right on spot. People like M.E. will not amount to even an ant hill of beans, but yet they have the nerve to call Riq as “coming off aggressive.” The nerve of some people.

  • We love you Riq!!!!!! :)

  • Some students might buy that book. Some hobbyists can buy that book.
However the true cocos2d indies won’t.

  • Alright, here are my two cents to add to the pile:

@riq it is my opinion that you will make more money working with Steffen, but I respect your decision to compete with the tactics you have chosen.

For the rest of ya, I’ve bought Steffen’s alpha book through apress, and I’ve found it to be extremely useful in explaining cocos2d where other books have failed to go into more detail. I am aware of the wealth of info online, but some people like an all-inclusive tome that explains all aspects of a subject.

The book is good. It’s rough right now, but it will be an excellent contribution to the cocos2d dev world.

  • I am also compelled to comment that the whole idea of “true indies” vs “non-true indies” is an ostracizing, segregating comment that will split this small community when it should be growing in size and strength of bonds.

We all have a lot in common, and if we focus upon that which we can agree upon, we will all be much more prosperous.
